  1. 1
Filtered Spectral Analysis One wave for every body you haven't scanned yet. Low frequencies on the left, gas giants on the far right.
  2. 2
Tuning line The bracket above it shows the chevron code of the nearest signal: three rows, a different pattern for each body type. Wider gaps mean the body has rings.
  3. 3
Reticle When you're tuned close, the same code shows on the rings, on the side the body is in. Bunched and even means tuned right; scattered means keep tuning. A dashed circle marks the body; solid means zoom in.
  4. 4
Orbital plane Most bodies sit along this line. Pick off the ones away from it first, then follow it.
  5. 5
Signal analysis The type of body under your tuning line.
  6. 6
Bodies discovered How much of the system you've found. The honk already counts the stars.
  7. 7
Bodies Scanned out of total. When it's full you hear "System scan complete".

Not needed: the far left of the band only holds signal sources, stations and asteroid clusters. None of them count for the system scan.

  • Honk first, and move away from the star so it doesn't hide anything.
  • The FSS opens facing where your ship points: aim at bodies off the plane first.
  • Gas giants first, then all their moons, then the next big body.
  • No need to wait for a planet to resolve: the scan counts as soon as it's done.
  • Out in the black, if only the star shows before you honk, nobody has been here: every body is yours to discover first.
